DESCRIPCIÓN DEL TALLER

Las personas sordas que se comunican en Lengua de Señas conforman una comunidad lingüística históricamente vulnerada en sus derechos que a su vez se encuentran con barreras idiomáticas y culturales que les impiden un acceso completo a la información y a la sociedad. En este taller virtual se hablará sobre el uso y el rol del intérprete sordo como un mediador lingüístico y cultural que facilita la participación de las personas sordas en la sociedad y su acceso a la información. Se entrará en detalle sobre la figura del intérprete sordo como especialista que brinda servicios de interpretación, traducción y transliteración en Lengua de Señas y en otras formas de comunicación visual y/o táctil.  El taller se presentará solo en lenguaje de señas.

BIO

Johanna Katz-Searls es intérprete sorda freelancer y nativa de Buenos Aires, Argentina que actualmente vive en Rochester, NY. Johanna ha cursado sus estudios universitarios en la Gallaudet University dónde obtuvo su BA en Ciencias de la Comunicación y su MA en Desarrollo Internacional. Además de ser intérprete freelancer, ella trabaja en el departamento de capacitación y desarrollo profesional de intérpretes en Sorenson Communications. Johanna es también la vicepresidenta de Mano a Mano Inc., una organización de intérpretes trilingües y es miembro de la Asociación Argentina de Intérpretes de Lengua de Señas (AAILS). Ella suele dar talleres y capacitaciones a personas sordas, oyentes y a intérpretes.

Deaf people who communicate in Sign Language are part of a linguistic community that has been historically vulnerable, with language and cultural barriers that prevent them from having full access to information and society. This webinar will discuss the use and role of the Deaf Interpreters as linguistic and cultural mediators that facilitate the participation of deaf people in society and their access to information. We will go into detail about the figure of the Deaf Interpreter as a specialist who provides interpretation, translation and transliteration services in Sign Language and other forms of visual and/or tactile communication.  This webinar will be presented in sign language only.

BIO

Johanna Katz-Searls is a freelancer Deaf Interpreter and a native from Buenos Aires, Argentina who currently lives in Rochester, NY.  Johanna has completed her university studies at Gallaudet University where she obtained her BA in Communication Studies and her MA in International Development. In addition to being a freelancer interpreter, she works in the Interpreter Education and Profesional Development at Sorenson Communications. Johanna is also the vice president of Mano a Mano Inc., an organization of trilingual interpreters, and a member of the Argentine Association of Sign Language Interpreters (AAILS). She gives workshops and trainings to deaf people, hearing people, and interpreters.
